Sooraj Barjatya: To Make Something Relevant for Salman Khan Is a Challenge

Sooraj Barjatya and Salman Khan made their debuts together more than three decades ago. The superstar has been a frequent collaborator of the actor. But now the veteran director feels that it is a challenge to create work that feels relevant and fresh for the superstar. They were supposed to do a film together, but the idea did not materialise as Barjatya was unable to come up with the right character for Khan.

“There are some subjects that you are not able to take it forward, you are unable to crack the climax or get the character, so till all of this does not come together, it doesn’t make sense to make a film. I’ve barely made seven films, but this is what I’ve decided to do, and till the time I don’t feel convinced, I won’t make it. So, I’m so happy that Salman Bhai is with me, and today to make something relevant and fresh for him at his age is a bigger challenge,” Barjatya told PTI.

Salman Khan and Sooraj Barjatya have collaborated on films such as Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), Hum Aapke Hain Koun..! (1994), Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999) and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015).

The filmmaker also spoke about Khan’s recent films that failed to live up to the audience’s expectations and shared that people have to allow each other to make mistakes and learn. He continued, “I think it happens in everyone’s life… it is just that he is a celebrity, that’s why he gets so much attention. But everyone should be allowed to make a mistake, to learn, because that is what his life is. We have to allow each other to grow; we should not be so harsh. He is such a good person, he is so strong that he is going to come back in a very big way.”

Meanwhile, in an earlier interview with Filmfare, Sooraj Barjatya spoke about his bond with Salman Khan and said, “It’s like the bond you share with a sibling, something you can’t question. No matter how much you fight, you grow up together. We met in our early 20s. When we started together, we didn’t know where our careers were headed or whether the film (Maine Pyar Kiya) would be a hit or a flop. Now, when we work together, it’s not about making a hit or a flop. It’s about being together, reliving those moments and playing those characters again.”
