“My Struggle Is Still to Be Known By Who I Am ” – Soni Razdan

Reflecting on how the industry was different for women during the 1980s and 1990s, Soni Razdan shared her perspective, talking about her experience and the transformations she has witnessed throughout the years. She mentioned that the current environment feels largely different. She also mentioned that her career initially flourished, but after her marriage, opportunities became lesser.

Recalling a past experience, Soni shared that after her marriage, she received comments suggesting that as Mahesh Bhatt’s wife, she no longer needed to find work. These comments made her frustrated, yet it was during that period that she secured a role in Buniyaad and eventually worked on several good films. However, she believes that the situation has since changed.

Soni expressed her satisfaction with the industry’s progress, noting the absence of discrimination against women. She mentioned that contemporary actresses now have the power to shape their careers according to their preferences. She said, “You can’t delay life! We were delaying our lives because we were working. What a ridiculous thing! To be an actor, a musician or a creative artiste, you’ve to live life, and that’s so important. You can’t be doing that, sitting in some ivory tower somewhere. It’s not possible.”
