War 2 Struggles to Maintain Momentum After a Jump Start

Ayan Mukerji’s War 2 may have slowed down after its thunderous start, but it has still managed to cross the Rs 300 crore mark worldwide in its first week. The spy action drama, headlined by Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR, faced a midweek slump, raising questions about how long it can sustain its box office run. Despite its big opening, the film’s lifetime collections may fall short of what the makers had envisioned.

War 2

On Wednesday, which marked day seven of release, the film collected just Rs 5.50 crore net in India, the lowest single-day figure so far. This took its domestic tally to Rs 199 crore net (Rs 238 crore gross). Just a few days earlier, the film had touched Rs 57.85 crore in a single day, but the sharp decline over the weekdays has left trade experts concerned about its future momentum.

The film’s overseas performance hasn’t been too encouraging either. So far, it has pulled in close to $8 million (Rs 69 crore) from international markets, bringing its overall worldwide earnings to about Rs 307 crore. However, with a massive budget hovering near Rs 400 crore, the film still has a long way to go before it turns profitable. Much of its struggle has been attributed to its clash with Rajinikanth’s Coolie as well as mixed word of mouth.

Part of Yash Raj Films’ ambitious Spy Universe, War 2 also features Kiara Advani in a prominent role. In addition, the film teases the next chapter of the franchise through its post-credits sequence, which introduces Bobby Deol and sets up Alpha. The upcoming film, starring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari, is slated to hit theatres this December, keeping the spy universe momentum alive despite War 2’s uncertain journey.
