Jonathan Majors’ Long-Delayed ‘Magazine Dreams’ Gets First Trailer

Two years after it debuted at Sundance as a possible Oscars vehicle for Jonathan Majors, Magazine Dreams has unveiled its first trailer. The long-delayed feature stars Majors as an aspiring body builder who goes to great lengths to achieve fame in the sport.

Searchlight won a bidding war for the project, but just months later, Majors was arrested in New York, and ultimately convicted of assault and harassment following an incident with his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari. Searchlight dropped the project, and Majors experienced a career freefall, losing his role as Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Magazine Dreams‘ was in doubt for nearly a year, but distributor Briarcliff picked up the project in October, setting a March 21 release date. The outfit is known for taking on controversial films and was rewarded with two Oscar nominations for its Donald Trump feature The Apprentice.

“You have to do something big and important, or nobody will remember you when you are dead,” says Majors’ Killion Maddox in the trailer.

Elijah Bynum directed and wrote Magazine Dreams and filmed for 24 days around Los Angeles, with Majors spending 18 months training for the role.

“It’s an all-in performance for the ages, layered with as much vulnerability as anger, and it’s to Majors’ credit that our hearts ache for Killian even — or perhaps especially — when he’s out of control,” wrote The Hollywood Reporter chief film critic David Rooney in his review. “Majors and writer-director Elijah Bynum manage the considerable feat of making us fear more for the intimidating colossus than the quivering employer he’s standing over.”
