Know All About Punjabi Actor-comedian Jaswinder Bhalla, Who Passed Away at 65
Punjabi actor-comedian Jaswinder Bhalla passed away at the age of 65 at a private hospital in Mohali. He breathed his last at 4 AM on Friday, August 22, after suffering a brain stroke. The actor had been admitted to the Fortis hospital a couple of days ago after his health deteriorated. As per the doctors, he had lost a lot of blood as well. Bhalla’s last rites will be held on August 23 at the Balongi cremation ground in Mohali.
Born in Ludhiana, Jaswinder Bhalla is regarded as one of the finest actors in Punjabi cinema. He, along with his schoolmates, got selected for All India Radio in 1975. Bhalla had already done comedy performances in university programs and in 1988, he started his professional career along with his co-performer Bal Mukund Sharma with the cassette Chhankata. Through the Chhankata series, he brought to life a wide range of characters chosen from all walks of Punjabi society. Some of the characters he portrayed were Chacha Chatar Singh, an old villager who spoke about Punjab’s politics, Bhana, an NRI youngster from Chacha’s village and JB, Chatar Singh’s son.
Some of his most popular films were Carry on Jatta, Mahaul Theek Hai, Jihne Mera Dil Luteya, Power Cut, Jatt and Juliet, Kabaddi Once Again and more. His last appearance was in the 2024 Shinda Shinda No Papa.
Bhalla believed that through his art, he could bring attention to social issues such as female foeticide, drug abuse and unemployment.
Bhalla married Paramdeep Bhalla, a Fine Arts teacher and together, they have two children – Pukhraj Bhalla and Ashpreet Kaur. Pukhraj is also a well-known actor in the Punjabi film industry. Jaswinder Bhalla is survived by his wife, son and daughter. His daughter is married in Norway.
