Songs of Paradise is all set to premiere globally on August 29. Inspired by the extraordinary journey of Padma Shri awardee Raj Begum, regarded as Kashmir’s first prominent playback singer, the film highlights her resilience and the cultural impact of her voice. Directed and co-written by Danish Renzu, the project is produced by Apple Tree Pictures Production and Renzu Films Production, with Excel Entertainment presenting it to audiences worldwide. The film aims to capture not just her personal struggle but also the spirit of a cultural movement that changed the landscape of music in the valley.
Leading the cast are Saba Azad and Soni Razdan, portraying Noor Begum at two defining stages of her life. They are joined by Zain Khan Durrani, Sheeba Chaddha, Taaruk Raina, and Lillete Dubey in pivotal roles. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Kashmir, the story weaves together themes of music, courage, and identity, offering a tribute to a woman who inspired generations by daring to raise her voice at a time when women’s dreams were often silenced.
“At Prime Video, we believe in the power of storytelling that can entertain, inspire, and foster a deeper connection with our wide range of audiences,” said Manish Menghani, director and head of content licensing, Prime Video India. “Songs of Paradise offers a fresh and emotional perspective rooted in Kashmir’s rich musical legacy and brings to life a remarkable lesser-known true story of resilience and independence, anchored by an extraordinary legacy and powerful performances.”
Director Danish Renzu expressed that the film is deeply personal for him as it pays tribute to Raj Begum, the first female voice on Radio Kashmir. “Songs of Paradise is a heartfelt tribute to Padma Shri recipient Raj Begum, the first female voice at Radio Kashmir. The film tells an emotionally stirring story inspired by her music, legacy, and grit during a time when societal restrictions bound women within both emotional and cultural confines. It is the story of a woman who dared to dream when dreaming itself was an unspoken taboo,” he said. With its ensemble cast and a story rooted in music and defiance, the film is set to resonate with audiences in India and more than 200 countries and territories.
