Sharon Stone Slams Amazon’s Plan to Reboot ‘Basic Instinct’: “Good F***ing Luck”

Sharon Stone isn’t impressed by Amazon MGM Studios’ plan to reboot her 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct.

The actress was asked by the Today show about the deal, which has original screenwriter Joe Eszterhas returning to pen an updated version of the hit film.

Sounding not entirely unlike her acerbic Basic Instinct character, Catherine Tramell, Stone pointed to previous attempt to re-capture the original movie’s success in 2006’s widely panned (and oft-forgotten) sequel, Basic Instinct 2, and seemed to shoot down any speculation that she’ll return as her iconic character.

“It goes the way the one that I was in,” the 67-year-old said (video below). “I would just say, ‘Why do you do it?’ Go ahead, but good fucking luck.” Stone then laughed.

Today co-anchor Craig Melvin pointed out that Stone’s candor is rather refreshing, to which Stone explained she simply doesn’t worry about what anybody thinks anymore. “I’m at that stage in my life where I already retired once,” she explained. “And I already died a couple times. I’m like, ‘What are you going to do? Kill me again? Go ahead.’”

As to Stone’s “Why do it?” question, the answer, of course, is obvious: The original film made $352 million domestically in 1992, which would be around $800 million today. Also, the studio found success rebooting 1989’s action film Road House last year. The studio has placed a big bet on the script: Amazon is playing Eszterhas a whopping $2 million against a possible $4 million if the project gets made.

The project has been described as “anti-woke.” The film was also met with heavy protests from the LGBTQ community for its handling of a lesbian relationship and for leaning into then-stereotypical movie tropes about homosexual killers.

“To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumors of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist,” Esztherhas said in a statement to TheWrap about the script ideal. “I call my writing partner the TWISTED LITTLE MAN and he lives somewhere deep inside me. He was born 29 and he will die 29 and he tells me he is ‘sky high up’ to write this piece and provide viewers with a wild and orgasmic ride. That makes me very happy.”

Stone is currently promoting her action film Nobody 2, where she plays an unhinged crime boss.
