Veteran Marathi Actress Jyoti Chandekar Passes Away at 68

Veteran Marathi actress Jyoti Chandekar, who was loved by audiences for her powerful performances in films and television, passed away in Pune on Friday, August 16. She was 68.  The actress had been unwell for some time and was undergoing treatment in Pune. Her cremation is scheduled to take place today (August 17) at 11 a.m. at the Vaikunth crematorium.
Jyoti Chandekar was also the mother of well-known Marathi actress Tejaswini Pandit. The bond between the two extended to the screen as well, with both acting together in films such as Ticha Umbartha, where Jyoti played her daughter’s mother-in-law. Their pairing was praised by critics for its authenticity and depth.

Last year, Jyoti had fallen ill on the sets of the TV serial Tharala Tar Mag when her sodium levels dropped. She took nearly two months to recover, and during this time, the makers of the show chose to adjust the storyline instead of replacing her. This reflected not only her importance to the serial but also the affection and respect she commanded within the industry. Her role as Poorna Aji in the show turned her into a household favourite, especially among family audiences.
Her career spanned over five decades, beginning when she was just 12 years old. Over the years, she acted in several acclaimed Marathi films including Mee Sindhutai Sapkal, Guru, Dholki, Paulwaat, Sukhant, Duniya Kari Salaam, and Shyamchi Aai (2023). Her strong screen presence and ability to adapt to both serious and light-hearted roles made her one of the most versatile performers of her time.

Apart from films, Jyoti Chandekar also left her mark on television with memorable roles in serials such as Tu Saubhagyavati Ho and Chhatriwali. For viewers, she was more than just an actress; she represented warmth, dignity, and emotional honesty on screen.
Her passing marks the end of a glorious era for Marathi cinema and television. Fans, colleagues, and co-actors are mourning the loss of an artist whose performances will continue to live on in the hearts of audiences.
