Netizens Divided Over Kajol’s Refusal to Re-deliver Marathi Speech in Hindi

Kajol has found herself in the middle of an unfortunate controversy with her refusal to deliver her Marathi speech in the Hindi language at a recent event. During the Maharashtra State Award, she was honoured with the Raj Kapoor Award for her contribution to Indian cinema. The actress delivered her winning speech in Marathi and English.
However, she was then requested to repeat her speech in Hindi, and Kajol wasn’t impressed with the person asking for this re-rendition. She refused the request and said, “Should I speak in Hindi now? Whoever wants to understand, will understand.”

As soon as the clip went viral on social media, netizens criticised her for refusing to speak in Hindi, as she is a big face in Bollywood. One user wrote, “Now Kajol and other Bollywood people should not make films in Hindi.” Another person added, “If Kajol doesn’t want to speak in Hindi, that’s totally her choice, but then maybe she should also stop acting in Hindi films. “Jisko dekhna hoga dekh lega.” Simple. Keep the same energy, ma’am.”

However, some netizens also came to her defence and argued that the event was in Marathi, so there was no need to speak Hindi. “Kajol didn’t “forget” Hindi. She chose not to perform for the Hindi imperialism circus. India isn’t Bollywood script — not everyone needs to speak Delhi to matter,” shared one user.

The same thoughts were echoed in another comment that read, “Why the drama over Kajol not speaking Hindi? It was a Marathi film award event, organised by the Marathi state govt. She spoke in Marathi  — what’s the problem? In fact, people should feel proud. Like a true Hindu, she respected her karma bhoomi, Maharashtra. Not everything needs to be a headline. Chill.”
Notably, this incident comes at a time when the state is affected by the language conflict. Reports have emerged of people being assaulted for not speaking in Marathi in places like Mumbai and Pune.
