Burbank Int’l Film Fest: Quentin Tarantino Set for Vanguard Award, Career-Retrospective Conversation, on ‘Quentin Tarantino Day’

Quentin Tarantino, the Oscar-winning auteur who has made an indelible impact on cinema over the past 35 years, will be honored at the upcoming Burbank International Film Festival with BIFF’s Vanguard Award, the fest’s organizers announced on Monday.

The event will take place on Sunday, Sept. 28, during the fest’s awards gala at the Marriott Burbank. The mayor of El Segundo, where Tarantino spent part of his childhood, will issue a special proclamation declaring the date “Quentin Tarantino Day,” and the mayor of Burbank, where he has shot portions of his films, will toast him as well. He will then participate in a career-retrospective conversation (moderated by yours truly).

“It doesn’t get better than honoring Quentin Tarantino,” BIFF president Anna Maybury said in a statement. “He’s not just a filmmaker. He’s a genre. He’s a rhythm. His work pulses with the very DNA of our town.” Added BIFF advisory board member Tony Muscio, “We’re proud to honor Quentin Tarantino, a walking IMDb and true believer in the power of film — as in, real film, 35mm. His story didn’t start on a red carpet or studio lot; his formative years were spent on the streets of the South Bay, which is why we’re delighted to share in this celebration with the city of El Segundo.”

The city of Burbank, nicknamed the “Media Capital of the World,” is home to over 1,000 media companies including Hollywood giants Warner Bros. Pictures and the Walt Disney Company. Previous BIFF honorees have included Tim Burton and Paul Feig.
