Shah Rukh Khan Wins His First National Award
In a historic moment for Indian cinema, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan has been announced as the winner of the National Film Award for Best Actor for his explosive performance in the 2023 blockbuster Jawan. This marks the very first time the legendary actor has been awarded a National Award in any category throughout his illustrious career spanning over three decades.
The official announcement was made during the 71st National Film Awards press conference held in Delhi on August 1. The jury, led by filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker, praised Khan’s dynamic double-role performance in Jawan, calling it a “powerhouse” act that balanced “raw intensity and acting depth.” In the film, Shah Rukh Khan played both a vigilante soldier father and an honest police officer son, roles that allowed him to showcase his versatility, emotional strength, and unmatched charisma.
The jury noted, “Awarded to the actor for delivering a powerhouse performance, balancing raw intensity and acting depth and bringing to life a hero who fights not just enemies, but society, creating two unforgettable cinema personas.”

Alongside SRK, actor Vikrant Massey also bagged the prestigious Best Actor award for his role in 12th Fail. Based on the life of IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, the Vidhu Vinod Chopra film tells the story of a young man who overcomes poverty and self-doubt to crack one of India’s toughest exams, the UPSC. Massey’s portrayal of Manoj was lauded for its subtlety, honesty, and emotional weight.
This double win marks a unique celebration of talent, both legendary and emerging, in the Indian film industry.
