Karan Johar to Make Film on Shabana Azmi-Dharmendra Love Story From Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani

It has been two years since the release of Karan Johar‘s romantic-drama, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, which released in 2023. During an interview, Karan Johar discussed the romantic-drama and hinted at the potential of developing a separate film centred on the love story of Shabana Azmi and Dharmendra, which was briefly shown in the movie.

In an interview, Karan shared his thoughts on the film, saying, “It is right up there with My Name Is Khan and, of course, my first directorial Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, which remains special as it brought a smile to my father’s (producer Yash Johar) face. Our production house was suffering huge deficits when I made Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. It brought huge financial respite to my dad.”

On the discussion that happened around the kiss scene featuring Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi, Karan said, “There is a separate love story there. I may one day make a film on their love story in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.”

The film told the story of a flamboyant, loud Punjabi guy, played by Ranveer Singh, who finds himself falling for an intellectual Bengali journalist, played by Alia Bhatt, and the ensuing family challenges that arise when they choose to marry. In the film, Shabana and Dharmendra played ex-lovers and the respective grandparents of Alia and Ranveer’s characters, who rekindle their connection after reuniting.

Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani achieved huge success at the box office and received acclaim for its unconventional screenplay, which explored themes of combating patriarchy and toxic masculinity through the ideals of love.

On the work front, Karan recently hosted the reality show The Traitors, which released on Prime Video. Additionally, his production, Dhadak 2, featuring Triptii Dimri and Siddhant Chaturvedi, is set for theatrical release on August 1.
