Exclusive: Kajol Shared Why She Almost Refused Dushman and What Finally Changed Her Mind
In an exclusive chat with Jitesh Pillai on In The Ring with Filmfare, Kajol opened up about her initial hesitation to sign Dushman and the reason she eventually said yes.
Kajol admitted, “When you play out these scenarios on a set, it is always a disturbing experience,” referring to the sensitive theme of the film. She added, “It is not an easy experience at all, and that’s one of the reasons that I didn’t want to do Dushman initially.”
Kajol recalled how she had a clear policy about certain subjects she wasn’t comfortable portraying on screen. She shared, “I take it as a policy that I don’t do these two things on screen. I don’t portray it and I don’t want to play it either. It’s something that I don’t feel comfortable doing and I don’t think it’s necessary for me to prove my acting prowess in that particular field. There are lots of other fields that I can prove my worth in.”
It was only after producer Pooja Bhatt assured her that she would never be forced to perform anything uncomfortable that Kajol agreed. She recalled, “Pooja was very clear and said, ‘I will completely take that into consideration, and we will work around it.’ That’s how Dushman came to be.”
Kajol, who has done a different range of films across her illustrious career, continues to receive appreciation for her strong performances. Her recent films Maa and Sarzameen have been well-received, with many praising her powerful performances. While Dushman challenged her boundaries, these new films have shown her ability to delve into different genres, proving once again why Kajol remains one of the most talented actors in the industry.
