Alia Bhat Backs Mother Soni Razdan Post on The Palestine Crisis

Veteran actress Soni Razdan recently made headlines for an emotional and powerful post about the ongoing crisis in Palestine, revealing her personal connection to the suffering due to her family’s history. Her daughter, Bollywood star Alia Bhatt, supported her by liking the post on social media.
In her post, Soni Razdan shared that her grandfather bravely fought against Adolf Hitler‘s regime in Germany by running an underground newspaper. “They distributed it as widely as they could, and of course, the inevitable happened. One day, he was found out, arrested, and thrown into a concentration camp,” she wrote. According to Razdan, her grandfather endured deep trauma in the camp. However, because he was German and had access to good legal support, he was eventually released, on the strict condition that he never set foot in Germany again.

Linking this history to the current situation in Gaza, Razdan expressed sorrow and irony. “It is ironic that the people for whom my grandfather risked his life under Hitler’s regime are now subjecting another race to atrocities,” she stated, referring to the Israeli attacks on Palestinians. She clarified that not all Jews support the violence, just as not all Germans supported Hitler. “But very few had the courage my grandfather had,” she added. The veteran actress went on to say that witnessing the present-day suffering in Palestine feels personal to her. “When I see what is happening in Palestine today, I am so glad he is no longer alive. It would have broken him.” She added that although she doesn’t consider herself as brave as her grandfather, she feels it is “important to speak up” because “remaining silent is a crime.”
