Anupam Kher: Meeting My Dream Directors Yash Chopra, Ramanand Sagar Felt Like an Achievement
In a recent conversation with Jitesh Pillai on In the Ring with Filmfare, veteran actor Anupam Kher looked back at the early days of his journey in Mumbai. Sharing a memory from the 1980s, Anupam said, “I met Ramanand Sagar ji, I met Yash Chopra ji, I met Muzaffar Ali, I even got to work with him. Back then, even if they didn’t offer you work, just meeting them felt like an achievement.”
He also spoke about his visit to the iconic Prithvi Theatre on the day he arrived in Mumbai, i.e. June 3. He shared, “I was very jealous of Satish Kaushik that day, because he had a play at Prithvi Theatre. I went there and saw Shabana Azmi hugging him and wishing him luck. She was so warm.” That very day, Anupam Kher also met theatre veterans Dolly Thakore and Alyque Padamsee. He reminisced, “Dolly told me, ‘Anupam, you have finally arrived in Bombay. You will make it.’”
But Alyque’s reaction was different. “He told Dolly, ‘I keep meeting fantastic actors. Can we go? The play is about to start.’ I remember feeling bad at that moment,” Anupam Kher admitted, adding that he later shared this story with Alyque himself. “It was a different world back then which was warm, welcoming, like a warm quilt on a cold winter night.”

Today, decades later, Anupam Kher continues to shine. His latest film Tanvi The Great, which he also directed, has won hearts with its emotional story and strong performances. The film features newcomer Shubhangi Dutt, who has received praise for her powerful acting abilities. With this film, Anupam Kher shows that his passion for storytelling remains just as strong as it was on the day he first walked into Prithvi Theatre.
