“He Said That I Wasn’t Milky White” – Vaani Kapoor Recalls When She Got Rejected for Her Skin Tone

For Vaani Kapoor, her initial experiences in the industry were filled with different kinds of difficulties. Vaani came from New Delhi to Mumbai, chasing her dream of making it big in Bollywood, but faced criticism for her appearance rather than her talent.

Vaani Kapoor opened up about her struggles in the film industry, revealing that she was once rejected for a role due to her skin tone. A director reportedly found her not “milky white” enough, a comment that still resonates with her today. She said, “I haven’t been told directly, but information reaches me via other people. A filmmaker had once said that I wasn’t fair enough to land a role. He said that I wasn’t ‘milky white.’’’

Vaani, rather than allowing it to break her spirit, remained firm and expressed her priorities with clarity. She said, “I told myself that it is what it is. If that’s a requirement, I don’t want to be a part of his projects. The feelings are completely mutual there. He can find his milky white beauty or his fair and lovely woman. I know that I can find a better filmmaker for myself. This happened ages ago.  And that filmmaker wasn’t from Mumbai.”

Even now, when Vaani is a known name in the industry, she continues to face criticism, but now it’s body-shaming. She said, “What I hear a lot sometimes is that I’m too skinny and that I should put on some weight because people like women with fuller bodies. But I like me! I don’t want to change anything about myself. I’m fit and healthy. I usually don’t get bothered by these things. Sometimes, you don’t know if such comments are coming from a place of concern or like good advice. But I think I’m pretty okay, and I like who I am.”

In films such as Shuddh Desi Romance, Befikre, War, and Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, Vaani Kapoor has shown consistent development as an actor.
