Directed by Honey Trehan and produced by Ronnie Screwvala’s RSVP Movies, Punjab 95 draws inspiration from the true story of Jaswant Singh Khalra, who uncovered the extrajudicial killings in Punjab during the ’80s and ’90s. However, the film has unfortunately faced some controversy. The censor board reportedly requested a number of cuts, approximately 120, which highlights the sensitivity surrounding its political themes.

Described by Honey Trehan as “a haunting depiction of systemic brutality and the cost of speaking truth to power,” the film was initially scheduled to release at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. Its unexpected withdrawal just before the screening further affected its release prospects. He even shared that he would take his name off the film if the cuts are forced. In an interview, Honey Trehan mentioned about the unusual demands of the Central Board of Film Certification for his film. Even though the story being based in Punjab, the board insisted on removing ‘Punjab’ from the title.

Despite these challenges, Diljit Dosanjh has remained committed to promoting the film, utilizing his platform to maintain public interest. While Punjab 95 awaits final certification, the actor is also occupied in his next project, Border 2, alongside Varun Dhawan and Ahaan Shetty. Diljit was last seen in Sardaar Ji 3, which also went through its own controversies surrounding Pakistani actor Hania Aamir’s casting in the film.
