Larry David Returning to HBO With Obamas-Produced Sketch Series

A year after Curb Your Enthusiasm aired its series finale, Larry David is returning to HBO, and he’s bringing a former president along with him.

David will star in, co-write and executive produce a sketch comedy series about American history. Higher Ground, the company headed by Barack and Michelle Obama, is producing the series, with the former president and first lady serving as executive producers.

The logline: “President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion. … But then Larry David called.”

“I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David,” the former president said in a statement.

Curb Your Enthusiasm writer/executive producer Jeff Schaffer and David will write the series, and Schaffer is also set to direct. The pair will executive produce with the Obamas and Higher Ground’s Vinnie Malhotra and Ethan Lewis.

“Once Curb ended, I celebrated with a three-day foam party. After a violent allergic reaction to the suds, I yearned to return to my simple life as a beekeeper, harvesting organic honey from the wildflowers in my meadow,” David said. “Alas, one day my bees mysteriously vanished. And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television, hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive.”

The untitled show will run for six episodes, presumably in 2026 if it’s meant to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. It’s set to feature some Curb actors and “noteworthy guest stars.”

“The characters Larry is playing didn’t change history,” said Schaffer. “In fact, they were largely ignored by history. And that’s a good thing.”

Added Amy Gravitt, executive vp and head of HBO and HBO Max comedy programming, “It’s hard to remember a time before Curb, or without Larry David’s perspective on modern life. We’re thrilled that Larry is coming back to HBO, this time with Higher Ground, to give us a glimpse at our shared history as we celebrate our Semiquincentennial.”
