Exclusive: “I got 17 slaps from Jaya Bachchan” – Anjali Anand on the confrontation scene

Anjali Anand talked about a very intense shooting day while filming Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. In an Actors’ Roundtable with Filmfare, she shared how two important scenes featuring her were shot back-to-back on the same day, the singing scene and the emotional confrontation. 

“The singing and the confrontation scene were one after the other. It was already 7 in the evening, and we had to pack up by 9. I didn’t want to do this scene in a rush. I really wished we had more time for it,” she said, explaining that she had done such scenes on television every now and then, but this one felt more different and important. 

Anjali wanted to give her best, especially since the film was being directed by Karan Johar. “If it doesn’t happen here and if I don’t feel it, I’m not going to be happy with it. I’ll never be able to sleep in peace. I told myself – Anjali, if you don’t give your 100% honesty here, then what’s the use? You’ve been working for so many years. If it doesn’t happen today, I’m finished,” she mentioned. 

Despite the pressure, Anjali delivered the scene in just the second take. But it came with its own challenges since she was slapped 17 times by Jaya Bachchan during retakes. She jokingly said that Jaya ji did connect a few out of those slaps, but she was her best friend on set and was the most fun person around. 

The day ended on a high for Anjali when Ranveer Singh came up to her and said, “You should know that every actor has one gold scene in a film. Today, you gave two platinum ones. Well done, Anjali!” Of course, for Anjali, those words made everything worth it, and she revealed how those words meant a lot to her coming from an experienced actor.
