David Corenswet talks about becoming Superman, flying on wires, working with James Gunn and more

David Corenswet is all set to take on one of the most iconic roles in cinema of the Superman. In a recent interview, he shared what it truly feels like to wear the cape, work with an amazing cast, and step into a role that generations have grown up with.

When asked about the feeling of flying, David admitted, “It is simultaneously extremely uncomfortable and the most exhilarating and liberating feeling in the world.” Even though the harness setup could be painful, once the cameras rolled, he said it all faded away, “You’re just flying.”

Remembering the moment he got the life-changing call from the director, David shared what he heard on the other end, “David, it’s James Gunn.” Hilariously, being unsure if it was really him, he asked James Gunn to prove it. Gunn replied, “Well, I’m calling to offer you the role of Superman.” David compared the moment to “an astronaut being told he is going to the moon.”

After reading James Gunn’s script, David shared that it opened his eyes and said, “All of this has been here for years and years and years. It just hasn’t been put up on the big screen yet.”

On the story’s unique structure, he said, “Superman’s origin is not forgotten in the movie. It’s just not the subject of the movie.” David believes Superman stands for “doing your best even in a world that doesn’t think those ideals are that cool.” About separating Clark Kent from Superman, he mentioned, “Clark really likes playing these two characters.”

He praised Rachel Brosnahan, calling her “the perfect Lois,” and described Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor as terrifying and full of range. On working with James Gunn, David said, “He just wants to make the most fun, most entertaining, most heartfelt movie that he can.” When asked about the iconic trunks, he laughed and said, “Maybe the aesthetic is supposed to be approachability.”

Concluding, David Corenswet promised and said, “This Superman is built for the big screen.”
