Barbie Ferreira to Receive Rising Star Award at Malta’s Mediterrane Film Festival

The Mediterrane Film Festival’s Golden Bee Awards will shine a spotlight on some Hollywood stars this weekend.

Leading the pack will be Euphoria breakout Barbie Ferreira who is set to receive an inaugural rising star award during the festival’s closing night gala ceremony on Sunday night in Malta.

The Malta Film Commission has also revealed that the gala ceremony will feature appearances by Anna Camp, Chris Perfetti, Karen Pittman, Jared Harris, Edmund Donovan, Joaquim De Almeida, Jon Watts, Kerry Ingram, Jake Schreier, Charlese Antoinette, Rick Carter, Bailey Bass, Gráinne Humphreys, Adrian Wootton (British film commissioner), Johann Grech (Malta film commissioner), Beverly Cutajar (chairperson of the Malta film commission) and Yolanthe Cabau.

The event will also see festival awards handed out across such categories as best feature film, best performance, best screenwriting, people’s choice, jury’s choice, mare nostrum, lifetime achievement, career achievement and Malta film legend.

Ferreira will pick up her rising star trophy following work in HBO’s buzzy Euphoria, The Afterparty, Unpregnant, Nope, Bob Trevino Likes It and House of Spoils. She next stars in Faces of Death and Mile End Kicks. “Barbie Ferreira represents the kind of bold, fearless talent the Mediterrane Film Festival is proud to spotlight. Her work already reflects a distinct voice and powerful screen presence that resonates with a new generation of storytellers. She clearly embodies the spirit of the new Golden Bee Rising Star Award — a talent on the rise, with a career we believe will help shape the future of cinema,” offered Mediterrane Film Festival director Ray Calleja.

The ceremony is expected to highlight a milestone centennial of filmmaking on the island nation, which has recently hosted such high-profile Hollywood productions as Jurassic World Rebirth and Gladiator II.

The Mediterrane Film Festival, mounted as celebration of film and creativity from the best of the Mediterranean region and beyond in 2023, is currently taking place around the theme “We Are Film” in Malta from June 21-29.
