Box Office Update: Sitaare Zameen Par Performs Well During Its First Weekend
Aamir Khan’s latest release, Sitaare Zameen Par, had a promising first weekend at the Indian box office, coming within touching distance of the Rs 60 crore mark. The film had a decent opening on Friday but picked up strong momentum over the weekend, thanks to positive word of mouth, a family-friendly storyline, and of course, Aamir’s dedicated fanbase. While it just missed the benchmark, the overall response has been encouraging, setting it up well for the week ahead.

As per early estimates, the film collected Rs 29 crore on Sunday alone, bringing the total weekend collection to Rs 59.90 crore (India net) across all languages. Friday had opened at Rs 10.7 crore, while Saturday saw a healthy jump with Rs 20.2 crore coming in. The Hindi version has been driving the bulk of the business so far, contributing about Rs 30.6 crore in the first two days alone. The film enjoyed good occupancy in major markets, around 51% in Hindi belts, 42% in Tamil-speaking regions, and close to 22% in Telugu circuits on Sunday.
This solid performance has helped Sitaare Zameen Par climb into Aamir Khan’s top 10 highest-grossing films in India, overtaking Rang De Basanti. It now holds the 9th spot, though it still has a bit of ground to cover before crossing Laal Singh Chaddha (Rs 61.12 crore) and the emotionally resonant Taare Zameen Par (Rs 62.95 crore). His top five earners still remain untouched, with Dangal, PK, Dhoom 3, 3 Idiots, and Thugs of Hindostan leading the pack by a large margin.
Interestingly, the film has also turned out to be a special one for Genelia Deshmukh. Known for her charming screen presence, she plays a significant role in this film, and Sitaare Zameen Par has now become the highest-grossing film of her career. It has comfortably overtaken her 2008 hit Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na, which had earned around Rs 5 crore domestically. As the weekdays roll in, the focus now shifts to whether the film can sustain its hold and enter the coveted Rs 100 crore club.
