Exclusive: Moushumi Chatterjee Recalls Fleeing From Balika Badhu Set in Full Bridal Makeup
Veteran actress Moushumi Chatterjee opened up about a memorable moment from her early days in cinema, when she ran away from the sets of Balika Badhu while still in full bridal makeup.
In an interview with Filmfare, the actress shared how her entry into films was nothing short of unexpected. “Our friend came running and said, ‘Open the door quickly, a film actress is coming to your house!” she recalled. That “actress” turned out to be filmmaker Tarun Majumdar’s wife, actress Sandhya Roy.
Trying to convince her father for the role was not easy. She said, “My father said, ‘I won’t take any risk. I am not signing any agreement.” Sandhya even offered him money, but he refused. She added, “He told her, ‘You keep it. You will have to bribe her with chocolates and dolls. But I do not think you will be able to manage her.”
Moushumi remembered how thrilling the first few days on set were. “Everyone was clapping, taking shots, and I was in 7th heaven,” she said. But soon, reality hit. She said, “Then I realised this is not my life. I was missing playing around, missing all the mischief I used to do.”
She eventually ran off the set while still in makeup. “I ran away with that makeup on,” she laughed. Director Tarun Majumdar often joked later that a film could be made just on the making of Balika Badhu, thanks to the chaos surrounding her.
Moushumi’s statement offers a light-hearted glimpse into her early reluctance toward acting, a surprising beginning for someone who went on to become one of Indian cinema’s most respected names. Her story is a reminder that sometimes, even the most iconic journeys can begin with hesitation and a pinch of mischief.
