Exclusive: Honey Irani on Divorce With Javed Akhtar: “It Wasn’t Because of Shabana…”

Honey Irani recently spoke to Filmfare about her illustrious career in Bollywood, marriage and divorce with Javed Akhtar and about her kids Farhan Akhtar and Zoya Akhtar. When asked about her divorce with Javed and the reasons that she thinks may have led to it, she said, “Initially you do (feel the anger.) You feel all of that.” As we noted that Shabana Azmi has always credited her for never making the children turn against her or Javed Akhtar, Honey added, “I’m not into that drama at all. We were not getting along for quite some time, I would say that.”

Did it have to do with a third person coming in? Honey explained that it did not. She said, “No. I’ve always said that. It wasn’t only because of Shabana. Not at all. It was always like, ‘hone wala hain kuch’ (something was about to happen).” Honey also shared that she does not know what to call the broken marriage. She said, “I don’t know what to call it. He was looking for something. He was looking for something very different from what I had.”

When the interviewer noted that Javed Akhtar has recently mentioned taking most blame for the divorce, Honey said, “I wouldn’t say it was totally his fault. I was also very young. I was very foolish. You can have kids in young age and still be foolish. I feel we realised ye nahi chalne wala hain (I feel we realised this is not going to work.)”

Sharing more, she emphasised on the love and respect they have for each other. “And it’s not that… You know even today, there is a lot of love and respect between us. I really love him. I really respect him. I know he will never say or do anything that will harm me or my children. That is one confidence I have about him. Even when we were separating, I knew he wasn’t going to do us wrong. I guess that made it easier also,” she said
