‘Sunday Night Football’ Worker in Critical Condition After Falling 50 Feet From Scoreboard

A Sunday Night Football worker fell 50 feet from a scoreboard on Saturday night while doing setup for the following evening’s Green Bay Packers vs. Pittsburgh Steelers primetime NFL game. The man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

The fall occurred at about 10 p.m., according to information shared by Pittsburgh Public Safety. Pittsburgh EMS, fire and police responded to Acrisure Stadium for “reports of a male worker who had fallen from a height,” it continued.

The first responders “learned from other personnel working in the stadium” that the man had “fallen about 50 feet from the main scoreboard to a mid-level catwalk area,” per the safety office. The rescue medics and firefighters stabilized the man and lowered him by rope (in a Stokes basket) to a waiting ambulance.

“An incident occurred last night at Acrisure Stadium as crews were preparing for the Sunday Night Football game,” a statement issued Sunday by a spokesperson for Acrisure Stadium reads. “A crew member installing production equipment suffered a fall. The individual was taken to Allegheny General Hospital, and we are awaiting confirmation of the worker’s condition.

The man is not an NBC employee, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. He was performing camera-operation work “on a contractor basis,” a spokesperson for NBC Sports said.

The man suffered “severe injuries mainly to his lower extremities” and “was transported to the hospital in critical condition,” the safety office said. Detectives from Pittsburgh Police headquarters have used drones to document the scene, it continued. When reached by THR, Pittsburgh PD offered no additional information.

Representatives for the Steelers and Pittsburgh Public Safety did not immediately respond to inquiries. The NBC Sports spokesperson told THR they are hoping to get an update on the man’s status today, Tuesday, Oct. 28.

It is currently unclear if the man was harnessed, and if not, why not.

The Steelers home stadium used to be called Heinz Field — colloquially, the name remains active. Acrisure, which secured the naming rights in 2022, is a financial technology and insurance company headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In a horrendous coincidence, on Monday evening, a man fell from the upper level of Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena during the Pittsburgh Penguins game. The fan suffered life-threatening injuries.

“At this time, everything points to this being an unfortunate accident, and we do not have any additional updates on this incident,” the Pittsburgh PD told THR of that fall.
