Dick Cheney, considered one of the most influential Republican vice presidents in U.S. history, has died at the age of 84.

Cheney died Monday night due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease, according to a statement from his family shared with the press.

“Richard B. Cheney, the 46th Vice President of the United States, died last night, November 3, 2025,” read a statement shared to media outlets, including BBC News. “He was 84 years old.”

“His beloved wife of 61 years, Lynne, his daughters, Liz and Mary, and other family members were with him as he passed. The former Vice President died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease,” it continued.

“For decades, Dick Cheney served our nation, including as White House Chief of Staff, Wyoming’s Congressman, Secretary of Defense, and Vice President of the United States. Dick Cheney was a great and good man who taught his children and grandchildren to love our country, and to live lives of courage, honor, love, kindness, and fly fishing. We are grateful beyond measure for all Dick Cheney did for our country. And we are blessed beyond measure to have loved and been loved by this noble giant of a man.”

The Nebraska-born politician served as the White House chief of staff for President Gerald Ford in the ’70s, before spending a decade in the House of Representatives. He is best known as George W. Bush’s vice president from 2001 to 2009, and as a key architect of the invasion of Iraq in 2003 through Bush’s “war on terror” after 9/11.

In recent years, Cheney was a vocal critic of current U.S. President Donald Trump and months before last year’s presidential election, he backed Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. Cheney said there had “never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” adding: “He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him.”

His daughter Liz Cheney, an ex-Republican lawmaker, served on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol riots. She was one of 10 Republicans to vote to impeach Trump after the event.

Cheney was portrayed by British actor Christian Bale in the 2018 biopic Vice, which landed both Bale and co-star Sam Rockwell Academy Award nominations, as well as a best picture nod, in 2019.
