Jim Caviezel to Star in Sony and Mandalay’s ‘Archangel,’ Set for a November 2026 Release
Sony Pictures is counting on Jim Caviezel to be a box office angel.
The studio and Mandalay Pictures announced Monday they have set a Nov. 6, 2026, release date for Archangel, an action pic set to star Caviezel alongside Olivia Thirlby, Garret Dillahunt and Shea Whigham.
The project originated when Mandalay brought Sony a script by Chris Papasadero and Randall Wallace, with Caviezel attached to star and David Zelon and Peter Guber on deck to produce and exec produce, respectively. Next, Will Eubank was attached to direct.
Caviezel is best known for his acclaimed performance as Jesus in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Released in 2004, the movie was a seminal moment in showing how much faith-based movies could earn. It grossed $612.1 million at the global box office to become the highest-grossing independent film of all time, as well as the top-grossing Christian film, not adjusted for inflation. While it still retains those records, it finally had to cede the crown for ranking as the top performing R-rated film of all time with $370 million in domestic ticket sales some 20 years later when Deadpool & Wolverine upset the apple cart and raked in $636.7 million.

In summer 2023, Caviezel was back in the headlines in a major way when starring in the box office phenomenon Sound of Freedom from faith-based Angel Studios. The pic earned north of $250 million against a $14.5 million budget that was largely crowdsourced. Caviezel also previously led the long-running CBS series Person of Interest.
Archangel doesn’t appear to have anything to do with why Caviezel isn’t a part of Gibson’s two-film project The Resurrection of the Christ, a follow up to Passion of the Christ that Lionsgate will open back-to-back over the Christian holidays in Spring 2027. Monica Bellucci also won’t return as Mary Magdale, indicating that Gibson may want to hire younger actors, given that the films take place just days after the original.
Sony and Guber’s Mandalay didn’t address plot details for Archangel, but a story from earlier this year says it is about a former Green Beret who lives in rural Wyoming and spends his time designing weapons for a secret U.S. military agency.
Eubank recently directed Land Of Bad starring Liam Hemsworth and Russell Crowe, and Underwater starring Kristen Stewart. His first feature, Love, was a breakout success, playing at numerous film festivals. Eubank is repped by CAA, Anonymous Content, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole LLP (JSSK).
