Santa Barbara Film Fest: ‘Wicked’ Star Cynthia Erivo Tapped for Kirk Douglas Award

Cynthia Erivo, the Oscar-nominated star of Jon M. Chu’s recent film Wicked and forthcoming sequel Wicked: For Good, has been tapped by the Santa Barbara International Film Festival to receive its 18th annual Kirk Douglas Award for Excellence in Film, the fest and the son of the award’s namesake, Michael Douglas, announced Tuesday.

The actress/singer, who already has to her name an Emmy, Grammy and Tony, will be feted at a black-tie dinner — which serves as a fundraiser for the fest’s year-round educational initiatives — at Santa Barbara’s Ritz-Carlton Bacara on Thursday, Dec. 4. (Wicked: For Good will hit theaters less than two weeks earlier, on Nov. 21.)

“Cynthia Erivo is a singular talent whose depth, range, and fearless commitment to her craft embody the spirit of excellence my father championed throughout his life,” Michael Douglas said in a statement. “It’s entirely fitting that she receives the Kirk Douglas Award, which celebrates bold artistry and enduring impact in film.”

Previous recipients of SBIFF’s Kirk Douglas Award include Will Ferrell, Ryan Gosling, Michelle Yeoh, Martin Scorsese, Hugh Jackman, Judi Dench, Warren Beatty, Jane Fonda, Jessica Lange, Forest Whitaker, Robert De Niro, Harrison Ford, Quentin Tarantino, Ed Harris, John Travolta and Michael Douglas.

The 41st edition of SBIFF will take place Feb. 4-14, 2026.
