Edward Berger’s ‘Ballad of a Small Player,’ Rami Malek and Russell Crowe-Starring ‘Nuremberg’ Join San Sebastian Film Festival Lineup

Edward Berger‘s Colin Farrell-starring Ballad of a Small Player and Juliette Binoche‘s directorial debut are among the latest additions to the San Sebastian Film Festival line-up.

The Spanish film fest, running Sep. 19-27, has on Tuesday confirmed that Berger’s Netflix film, also starring Tilda Swinton and Fala Chen, will premiere out of competition following his Conclave success at last year’s edition. The movie is an adaptation of Lawrence Osborne’s novel following an English con man on Macao’s gambling scene.

In the special screenings section, French actress Binoche will present her directorial debut called In-I In Motion. The film is a non-fiction work looking back at the experience of In-I, the hybrid dance and theater show produced by Binoche in 2007 with dancer and choreographer Akram Khan.

Truth director James Vanderbilt will screen his next project, Nuremberg, in which Rami Malek stars as American psychiatrist Douglas Kelley. On the eve of the Nuremberg trials, Kelley assessed 22 Nazis, among them Hitler’s right-hand man, Hermann Göring. Russell Crowe stars as Göring in Vanderbilt’s film.

Also showing out of competition is Climbing for Life, based on the true story of the Japanese mountaineer Junko Tabei, the first woman to reach the summit of Mount Everest. Its director, Junji Sakamoto, is best known for the likes of Face (2000) and Children of the Dark (2008).

Claire Denis will return to San Sebastian with the in competition feature The Fence, starring Isaach de Bankolé, Matt Dillon, Mia McKenna-Bruce and Tom Blyth. Elsewhere, Argentinian filmmaker Dolores Fonzi will debut Belén, the festival also said, and Joachim Lafosse will present Six Days in Spring. The full additions unveiled on Tuesday can be found here.

These films join the previously announced Bad Appleswith Saoirse Ronan, as well as Alice Winocour’s Couture with Angelina Jolie, centering on the French fashion industry.
