Coolie and War 2 Dominate Independence Day Weekend at The Box Office

The Independence Day 2025 weekend has brought a box office storm, with Rajinikanth’s Coolie and Hrithik Roshan and Jr NTR’s War 2 drawing in record audiences across India and overseas. Both films, though clashing on release, have managed to carve their own space and deliver excellent numbers in just three days.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Coolie opened with a historic Rs 150 crore worldwide gross on Day 1, making it the highest-opening Tamil film ever. In India, the film earned Rs 65 crore net on its first day, led by Tamil collections of Rs 44.5 crore. Over the next two days, the movie continued its strong run, adding Rs 54.75 crore on Day 2 and Rs 38.50 crore on Day 3. With this, the three-day India net collection stands at Rs 158.25 crore, while worldwide gross has already crossed Rs 320 crore. The film also created history by becoming the fastest Tamil film to surpass Rs 300 crore globally, breaking previous records set by Leo and other blockbusters. Overseas, Coolie has contributed over 15 million dollars in just three days, highlighting Rajinikanth’s unmatched international appeal.

War 2

On the other side, War 2, directed by Ayan Mukerji and produced under YRF’s spy universe, also registered an impressive start. The film opened at Rs 52 crore net on Day 1 and followed it with a strong Independence Day jump, collecting Rs 57.35 crore. By Day 3, it added another Rs 33 crore, bringing its three-day India net total to Rs 142.35 crore. Globally, War 2 has crossed the Rs 200 crore gross mark, with notable contributions from the Hindi market and significant support from Telugu states thanks to Jr NTR’s presence. The film also saw steady occupancies in the South, performing particularly well in Hyderabad, Chennai and Bengaluru.
War 2
The clash between Coolie and War 2 has given audiences two major spectacles to celebrate this festive weekend. While Coolie leads in overall box office numbers, War 2 has successfully extended YRF’s spy universe with strong collections and wide appreciation for its action sequences. Both films continue to perform well, and industry experts expect them to grow further through the holiday period.
Together, Coolie and War 2 have turned Independence Day weekend into one of the biggest box office celebrations after Saiyaara, giving fans across languages plenty to cheer about.
