Did You Know Karan Johar’s Father Yash Johar Gave Salakaar Director Faruk Kabir His First Break?
Filmmaker Faruk Kabir has made a name for himself with his works such as the Khuda Haafiz franchise and Allah Ke Banday. Known for telling intense and gritty stories, he is now in the news for his most recent series, Salakaar. But this talent got its shot in the industry due to a late legend, filmmaker Yash Johar.

Faruk Kabir is currently taking in all the praises for Salakaar. The filmmaker’s dad, NS Kabir, was a close friend of Karan Johar’s father, Yash Johar. And it was the filmmaker who saw the potential in Faruk and gave him his first break. As he remembers the late filmmaker fondly, Faruk shares, “Yash ji, or Tom uncle as he was lovingly called by many, was a very warm guide to me thanks to my father and his friendship. A great part of the goodwill that even Karan Johar enjoys today, I feel are his blessings as his kindness to others was legendary.”
The Salakaar director adds, “Yash uncle was the man of all seasons, very hard working, extremely honest and even Shah Rukh Khan’s go-to person when anything needed to be resolved. I always looked up to Yash uncle and remember him with a lot of fond memories.”

Faruk started his career as an assistant director in films at just the age of 18 with SRK’s Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani and Asoka. Faruk’s latest release, Salakaar, tells the story of an Indian spy whose courage and intelligence foil the enemy’s plans to protect national security, leading him to uncover a top-secret nuclear project in Pakistan. The narrative moves through two timelines, one set in 1978 and the other in 2025. The series stars Naveen Kasturia as Indian spy Adheer, Mouni Roy as Indian spy Maryam, Mukesh Rishi as Pakistani General Ziaul and Surya Sharma as Pakistani Colonel Ashfaq.
It is streaming on JioHotstar from August 8.
