Throughout the trailer, David’s driver and friend, played by Jeffrey Wright, provides him with support on multiple occasions. “I think you got to be a little crazy sometimes in this world to get what you want,” he says at one point.
When the two head into a confrontation, Wright’s character is prepared, loading a gun. When David asks why, he responds, “Insurance. That’s Jake from State Farm.”
This collaboration is Washington and Lee’s fifth project together, and their first in almost 20 years.
Highest 2 Lowest is set in New York City and is a reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s tense police procedural High and Low, released in 1963. It stars Washington as an influential music executive and the victim of a ransom ploy that throws him into a grave predicament.
The Highest 2 Lowest cast also includes Elijah Wright, Aubrey Joseph and Ice Spice. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May, check out The Hollywood Reporter’s review here.
A24 will release the film in theaters on Aug. 15 before it becomes available to Apple TV+ subscribers on Sept. 5.
