Alia Bhatt and Payal Kapadia Backed Films Selected for Asian Project Market at BIFF

The Busan International Film Festival has announced the official selection of 30 projects for this year’s Asian Project Market, and Indian projects have made a strong mark. Difficult Girls, produced by Alia Bhatt and directed by her mother Soni Razdan, made it to the list. The film has been produced under Bhatt’s banner, Eternal Sunshine Productions, and also involves her sister, Shaheen Bhatt and producer Alan McAlex, known for Sandhya Suri’s Santosh. All We Imagine As Light‘s director Payal Kapadia backed film, The Last of Them Plagues, directed by Kunjila Mascillamani, also made it to the prestigious list. The film has been co-produced by Jeo Baby and Kani Kusruti. The lineup also includes The Magical Men, directed by Indian director Biplob Sarkar. Indian director Pradip Kurbah’s Moon is also in the lineup. Notably, he won the BIFF 2019 Jiseok Award.

Besides these, the lineup also includes a total of five Chinese-language films, including three from Taiwan that highlight women-led narratives. Japan is represented by directors Shiraishi Kazuya, Fujita Naoya and Zhang Yaoyuan. Their projects explore themes such as migrant labour, identity and challenges of youth.


The Asian Project Market (AMP) provides emerging filmmakers a platform to connect with top international film industry professionals, spotlighting a diverse slate of fresh feature film projects each year from big-scale commercial to low-budget indie projects.

The APM will take place from September 20 to 23 as part of the 20th Asian Contents & Film Market at BEXCO, Busan. The winners will be announced during the APM Awards Ceremony on September 23. This will be held alongside the 30th Busan International Film Festival, which will go on from September 17 to 26.
Talking of Alia Bhatt, she was most recently seen in Vasan Bala’s film Jigra with Vedang Raina, where she played a fierce sister on a mission to save her brother. She will next be seen in YRF’s Alpha with Sharvari and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Love and War with Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal.
