Tanvi The Great box office Day 1: Slow start for Anupam Kher film, earns Rs 40 lakh

Marking his return to direction after over two decades, Anupam Kher’s ‘Tanvi The Great’ hit theatres on Friday but saw a lukewarm response at the box office. The film, which tackles themes of autism and the Indian Army, managed to collect just Rs 40 lakh on its opening day, according to Sacnilk.

With a reported 14.41 per cent occupancy in Hindi-speaking regions, the opening was subdued despite its ambitious premise and veteran ensemble cast, which includes Pallavi Joshi, Boman Irani, Jackie Shroff, and Kher himself.

Though the domestic reception has been muted, ‘Tanvi The Great’ was previously met with critical appreciation during its international festival circuit, having screened at Cannes and the New York Indian Film Festival. Speaking about the film, Kher shared, “Everyone who watches Tanvi The Great will walk away a little kinder, perhaps even changed.”

The film’s emotional core – rooted in its depiction of a neurodivergent protagonist and her journey through adversity – has drawn praise for its intent and performances. However, reviews have also highlighted its shortcomings. India Today noted that while the film begins with “a spark of promise,” it ultimately falters due to “stereotypical portrayals” and an overreliance on emotional spectacle. The critique suggests that in its effort to present Tanvi as ‘special’, the narrative overlooks the quiet resilience found in her flaws, struggles, and smaller triumphs.

Produced by Anupam Kher Studios in association with NFDC, the film also stars Arvind Swami and features a soundtrack by Oscar-winning composer MM Keeravani, lending musical gravitas to the narrative. Global distribution is handled by Excel Entertainment and AA Films, with industry heavyweights Ritesh Sidhwani, Farhan Akhtar, and Anil Thadani backing the release.
