Exclusive: Anupam Kher Recalls a Life-Changing Lesson From Amitabh Bachchan
In an exclusive chat on In The Ring with Filmfare, veteran actor Anupam Kher looked back at an unforgettable moment from his early days in the film industry. While shooting for Aakhree Raasta in Chennai, Anupam Kher had his first-ever scene with Amitabh Bachchan. At the time, he admitted, “I was arrogant. I had done a lot of films.”
On set, Anupam Kher was complaining to the production manager about the air conditioning. When he learned he would be shooting with Mr. Bachchan, he brushed it off with confidence. But what happened next left a deep impact on him.
Amitabh Bachchan arrived on time, dressed in a thick wig, false beard and moustache, wearing a kambal (blanket) despite the scorching heat. Anupam Kher approached him and asked how he managed to sit like that in such weather. Amitabh Bachchan’s calm reply was, “Anupam, garmi ke baare mein sochta hu toh lagti hai. Nahi sochta toh nahi lagti.” (“If I think about the heat, I feel it. If I don’t, I don’t feel it.”)
That one line changed something in Anupam Kher. He shared, “After that, I’ve never complained about heat on set. That was a lesson for life. That’s why the man is so great. That’s why he has survived so many ups and downs.”
