‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Renewed for Season 3 With New Showrunner
AMC is booking a third trip to Dead City.
The cable and streaming outlet has picked up a third season of its Walking Dead offshoot Dead City, which stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan. The pair reprise their roles from the Walking Dead flagship as Negan and Maggie, who are trying to survive and build a community in what’s left of Manhattan.
Season three will also feature a showrunner change: Franchise veteran Seth Hoffman will take over Dead City from Eli Jorné, who ran the show’s first two seasons. Production on the third season is set to begin in the fall in Boston.
“We’re thankful to Eli Jorné for two seasons of Dead City that took the story of these iconic characters in exciting new directions and broadened this thriving universe by introducing a new corner of the walker apocalypse,” said Dan McDermott, president of AMC Networks entertainment and AMC Studios. “As we continue to create new stories for a passionate TWD fanbase, we’re delighted to have a seasoned Walking Dead veteran like Seth Hoffman at the helm of a new season, alongside the remarkable Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, that will bring new adversaries and alliances and push the boundaries of Maggie and Negan’s conflicted relationship.”
Hoffman was a writer and co-executive producer on The Walking Dead, penning 10 episodes during the show’s heyday of seasons four, five and six. “I’m excited to have the chance to dive back into The Walking Dead universe and work to deliver another dynamic season’s worth of stories to this epic franchise,” he said in a statement. “It’s a true honor to chart out the next chapter for Maggie and Negan’s iconic adventures in Dead City. Lauren, Jeffrey and Scott [Gimple] are incredible creative partners and I’m thrilled to collaborate with them to bring this story to life.”
Season three will pick up in the aftermath of the second season finale, which saw Maggie make a choice to put away her long-standing grudge against Negan. AMC describes the coming season this way: “Maggie and Negan finally put aside their differences to build the first thriving community in Manhattan since the apocalypse, but when chaos in the city begins to arise, they are forced to question: Have they learned from their old wounds or will their dark past spell doom for the entire city?”
Hoffman will executive produce season three with TWD franchise chief content officer Gimple, Morgan, Cohan, Brian Bockrath and Colin Walsh.
In addition to his time on The Walking Dead, Hoffman has also worked as a writer and producer on Prison Break, House and Prime Video’s Tell Me Your Secrets. He is repped by CAA and Hansen Jacobson.
