Exclusive: Rajkummar Rao Opens Up About a Spooky Moment on The Sets of Ragini MMS

Rajkummar Rao recently recalled a chilling experience from the sets of his 2011 film Ragini MMS. The actor shared how one scene left him genuinely terrified, in a recent interview with Jitesh Pillai on In The Ring with Filmfare.

He said, “I got Ragini MMS in 2011, I think. And the reason I said yes to that film was because I’ve experienced this – how you feel scared. I know how to recreate that feeling on screen because of my training.”

The film, known for its voyeuristic format shot through CCTV and DV cameras, gave Rajkummar the space to keep things as real as possible. He added, “The actors I was influenced by—I wanted to be very real on screen.”

During one shoot in a spooky bungalow, Rajkummar had to walk alone in pitch darkness towards a room. Recalling the moment, he said, “There was a veranda. I had to walk around 30 steps… pitch dark. This was shot from a CCTV and I was walking towards a room. I refused to give that shot. I was like, there is no way I’m going into that room alone.”

He continued, “Unless I know there are two light boys or somebody sitting there, I’m not doing it. I don’t want to open the room and see a ghost. My problem is not what the ghost would do… that image would stay with me for life. I don’t want to live with that.”

Rajkummar’s instinct for authentic and real performances still reflects in his work today. His latest film Maalik has received praise from critics and viewers alike for his intense portrayal of a gangster. Once again, Rajkummar proves that whether it’s horror or political drama, he always brings authenticity to the screen.
