Suresh Gopi’s Janaki V/s State of Kerala’s release postponed
Originally set to hit theatres on June 27, the release of Janaki v/s State of Kerala has been pushed after the Central Board of Film Certification declined to issue its screening certificate. Director Pravin Narayanan announced via social media, “Janaki denied screening by the Censor Board! No release on the 27th!” The decision comes despite the film having already secured a U/A 13+ rating without any mandated cuts. The sticking point, the board’s insistence that the word Janaki be dropped from the title, a demand the producers categorically refused to meet.
Certification Clash Over Title
Although the CBFC has not provided an official rationale, industry insiders speculate that the use of Janaki, another revered name for Sita, daughter of King Janaka in the Ramayana, may have prompted concerns. With promotional materials printed and advance bookings in place, the makers now face the dilemma of either challenging the board’s verdict or exploring alternative release strategies.
Talented Cast & Crew
Beyond the powerhouse pairing of Suresh Gopi and Anupama Parameswaran, JSK boasts a robust supporting lineup. Suresh Gopi’s son, Madhav Suresh, makes a notable appearance alongside Shruti Ramachandran, Divya Pillai, Askar Ali, Baiju Santhosh, Kottayam Ramesh, and Shoby Thilakan. Behind the scenes, cinematographer Renadive has taken over cinematography duties, while editor Samjith Mohamed has crafted a taut narrative flow. Composer Ghibran is on board for the score and music of this legal thriller.
What’s Next for JSK?
With the producers standing firm on retaining the original title, many expect an appeal to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT). Should they take that route, audiences might have to wait weeks, or even months, before JSK finally reaches theaters. There’s also talk of a direct-to-digital debut if the theatrical window closes, although the team has emphasized their preference for a big-screen unveiling.

As fans and critics watch this dispute unfold, Janaki v/s State of Kerala has become more than just a film, it’s a flashpoint in the ongoing debate over creative freedom and cultural sensitivity in Indian cinema. Whether the filmmakers prevail in preserving their chosen title will determine not only JSK’s fate, but potentially set a precedent for future projects that draw on mythological or religious nomenclature.
