‘The Residence’: Uzo Aduba Attempts to Solve a Murder at the White House in Teaser for Shondaland Whodunnit Series
There has been a murder at the White House.
In the first teaser trailer for Netflix’s The Residence series released on Thursday, Uzo Aduba stars as a detective Cordelia Cupp who attempts to solve the case of the dead body that was discovered on the third floor of the White House.
“132 rooms. 157 suspects. 1 dead body,” the show warns.
The “screwball whodunnit” features a slew of possible suspects questioned over the dead body that was found during a state dinner. However, will they outsmart Cordelia who, in the trailer, is described as the best detective in the world?

“Mr. President. This house needs to be treated like a crime scene,” Aduba cautions in the trailer. Throughout the teaser, it’s clear chaos is expected to begin as hidden secrets, lingering dangers and political tensions complicate the case with the culprit possibly being a member of the staff or guest.
“There is no place like this place. It is bigger than you,” Aduba’s Cordelia is overheard being told only for her to quip, “Do you mean the house is literally bigger than me? Because that seems obvious.”
The eight-episode series from Shondaland and former Scandal writer and producer Paul William Davies also stars Randall Park, Giancarlo Esposito, Susan Kelechi Watson, Jane Curtin, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Al Mitchell and Edwina Findley.
The Residence premieres on Netflix March 20.
The late Andre Braugher was originally tapped to star as the White House usher, but died on Dec. 11 following a battle with lung cancer. Esposito took over the role.
“I couldn’t be prouder and more honored to be stepping into Shondaland’s The Residence for someone that I loved and respected and cherished in Andre Braugher,” Esposito said in a statement announcing the casting at the time. “To be afforded the opportunity to create in his honor with this incredible team extends the depth and breadth of his legacy through all of us who loved him so dearly.”
Davies, who previously teamed with Shondaland on ABC’s Scandal and For the People, serves as showrunner and exec produces alongside Rhimes and Shondaland’s Betsy Beers.
The series utilizes former White House correspondent Kate Andersen Brower’s The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House about life inside the White House from staff as a jumping-off point, rather than being a direct adaptation.
