‘Suits’ Star Gabriel Macht “Always” Apologizes to Fans Who “Went to Law School Because of” Show

Gabriel Macht says he apologizes “profusely” to Suits fans who decide to go to law school because of the show.

The actor, who played confident, high-powered attorney Harvey Specter on the hit series for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019, recently shared with PeopleMagazine his reaction to people who told him they’re pursuing their own law degree because of his character.

“There are so many kids that have gone to law school because of the show — because they think it’s fast-moving, there’s family, there’s loyalties, it’s cool, it’s slick. People are witty. There’s a lot of drama, all this kind of stuff,” Macht explained. “When people come up to me, and they’re like, ‘I went to law school because of you,’ I always apologize profusely.”

“‘I’m sorry,’” the actor said he tells fans following those interactions. “If you like to read, that is great because you’re going to sit with a book, like this, for hours.”

Suits follows Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), a brilliant college dropout on the run from a drug deal gone bad, who finds himself working with Harvey Specter, one of New York City’s best lawyers. The Aaron Korsh-created series also starred Meghan Markle, Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman and Gina Torres.

In the summer of 2023, Suits had a resurgence in popularity after it began streaming on Netflix (in addition to Peacock), breaking streaming records for several weeks.

Macht said he loves seeing that fans have “created this whole new energy around it,” adding, “I don’t know if it was Netflix, or if it was TikTok, or [if] the stars aligned in some way, and it absolutely blew up.”

The renewed interest in the series also led Korsh to develop a spinoff, Suits: LA, which premieres on NBC Feb. 23. The show stars Stephen Amell and Bryan Greenberg.

Macht added of the spinoff, “[I’m] excited for them to take the ball and run with it.”
