Laverne Cox Reunites With Estranged Father as a Trans Woman in Trailer for Norman Lear-Produced ‘Clean Slate’
One of producer Norman Lear’s final projects will be released on Prime Video next month.
Clean Slate, starring Laverne Cox and George Wallace, follows a father and daughter working to repair their relationship after not speaking for more than two decades. Wallace stars as Harry, an old-school, outspoken down-south car wash owner who quickly has to get his pronouns up to par when his estranged son shows up on his doorstep in Mobile, Alabama, as Desiree (Cox), a proud trans woman.
What was supposed to be a short visit for Desiree turns into a more extended stay when the art gallery she ran in New York City loses funding and she becomes roommates with her dad. Her relationship with Harry isn’t the only one Desiree finds herself navigating, as her identity causes some whispers in the church and a bit of strife between her and her closeted best friend Louis (D.K. Uzoukwu) who’s the choir director there. A budding romance also presents itself when Mack (Jay Wilkison), Harry’s second in command at his car wash, takes an immediate liking to her, as does his daughter Opal (Norah Murphy), who aspires to leave Mobile and one day achieve her big city dreams like Desiree.
Harry, too, finds himself flirting with the idea of a love connection as he and Louis’ mother Ella (Telma Hopkins) begin to grow closer. However, he and his neighbor Miguel (Philip Garcia) continue to battle it out, threatening to be arch-nemeses until the very end.
Clean Slate was created by Cox, Wallace and Dan Ewen (Dear Santa), who serve as executive producers along with Lear, who died on Dec. 5, 2023, at the age of 101, and Brent Miller, president of production and development for Lear’s ACT III Productions. Ewen also co-showruns the comedy series with executive producer Simran Baidwan.
All eight episodes of Clean Slate release on Prime Video Feb. 5.
