Shilpa Shetty approaches court to protect personality rights after KJo, Aishwarya
Actor Shilpa Shetty moved the Bombay High Court for protection of her personality rights through her lawyer Sana Raees Khan. Khan said, “The misuse of Ms. Shilpa Shetty’s name, image and identity has reached a point where legal intervention became imperative.”
She added, “Her persona is the product of decades of credibility, discipline and public trust. No platform has the right to weaponise her identity for clandestine commercial gain. Our suit before the Bombay High Court signals zero tolerance for the rampant misuse of celebrity rights.”
Earlier this year, KJo sought the Delhi High Court’s intervention to protect his personality rights. The petition comes after allegations that Johar’s name was being exploited for fundraising, following similar cases involving Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan.
In October, actor Akshay Kumar also approached the Bombay High Court seeking protection of his personality rights. The court said it will pass an ad-interim order protecting the actor amid the rise of deepfake videos that “not only hurt his stature but have huge consequences.”
It all started when the Delhi High Court, in a landmark November 2022 case (Amitabh Bachchan v. Rajat Nagi & Ors.), granted an interim injunction protecting Amitabh Bachchan’s personality rights from unauthorised commercial use. The ruling prevents anyone from using his name, image, voice, or any other unique attribute of his persona without his consent.
Several other stars, including Abhishek Bachchan, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Hrithik Roshan and Arijit Singh, among others, also approached the court in the past seeking protection of their personality rights.
