Thamma box office Day 1: Ayushmann’s film 2nd to Stree 2 in horror comedy universe

Ayushmann Khurrana’s ‘Thamma’ recorded a strong opening at the box office, becoming the second-best opener in Maddock’s horror-comedy universe (MDHCU) after ‘Stree 2’. The film earned around Rs 24.25 crore nett on Monday.

The post-Diwali period benefitted the film, drawing strong family footfall to theatres. Despite receiving mixed reviews, ‘Thamma’ witnessed good traction, with audience turnout improving through the evening shows.

  1. Stree 2 (2024): Rs 51.8 crore
  2. Thamma (2025): Rs 24.25 crore
  3. Bhediya (2022): Rs 7.48 crore
  4. Stree (2018): Rs 6.82 crore
  5. Munjya (2024): Rs 4 crore

‘Thamma’, the first love story from MDHCU, stars Rashmika Mandanna opposite Ayushmann Khurrana. The two play Betaals — phantom-like, vampire-inspired beings born to protect humanity from evil.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui portrays the film’s main antagonist, Yakshasan, who faces off against Ayushmann’s Alok in the climactic battle.

The film’s business is expected to grow further during the post-Diwali holidays, which will continue to draw audiences to theatres.

Directed by Aditya Sarpotdar and written by Niren Bhatt, ‘Thamma’ marks another ambitious addition to Maddock’s expanding horror-comedy universe. The film also features several twists and references to the previous films in the MDHCU, including ‘Stree’, ‘Bhediya’ and ‘Munjya’. While Varun Dhawan plays an extended cameo as the bhediya, we also see Jana, played by Abhishek Banerjee, from the ‘Stree’ world.
