“It’s Things Like Male Actors Getting Better Facilities” – Kriti Sanon on Inequalities In Bollywood

It has been announced that Kriti Sanon will serve as UNFPA India’s honorary ambassador for Gender Equality. In this role, she will be at the forefront of promoting equal opportunities and working to eliminate gender stereotypes. During the event, Kriti shared her personal experiences with gender norms, explaining that although she was raised in a progressive home, the inequality she observed around her was impossible to ignore.

During an exclusive conversation with NDTV, Kriti discussed the huge influence her upbringing had on her perspective. Her parents, both working professionals, equally shared responsibilities within the household, creating an environment where Kriti and her sister experienced no restrictions based on their gender.

However, Kriti acknowledged that the situation was, in fact, different for her mother. She said, “My mom grew up in a time when boys were allowed a lot of things that girls were not. Girls were supposed to stay at home, cook, and follow rules. She wanted to learn swimming or dancing but couldn’t. The only thing she fought for was studying, and she became a professor.”

Kriti also shared, “Her first thought for me was, ‘Do whatever you want to. Whatever you dream of, go for it.’ That came from her.” Although her childhood was free of gender bias, Kriti admitted that the industry exposed her to subtle inequalities. She mentioned, “It hasn’t happened too many times, but little things like the male actor getting a better car or a better room… It’s not about the car, but about not making me feel smaller because I’m a woman. Just make it equal.” Kriti observed how even the smallest behaviour can reveal deeply ingrained mindsets. She said, “Sometimes even ADs have a habit of calling the female actor first and waiting for the male actor later. I’ve had to tell them not to do that. The mindset needs to change.”

As Kriti steps into her new role at UNFPA, her message is quite clear, gender equality is initiated through everyday choices, spanning from homes to professional environments. And it also starts with standing up for fairness, even in the most minor matters.
