Why Jennifer Aniston Went to Battle With Studio Execs Over Wig in ‘Horrible Bosses’

When Jennifer Aniston really wants something, even as simple as a wig, she is willing to go to battle over it.

The Emmy-winning actress recently shared during an interview for Vanity Fair‘s “Rewatch” video series that she fought with Warner Bros. to be able to wear a brunette wig in 2011’s Horrible Bosses, as they preferred her beloved blonde hair.

“I fought for that wig, by the way. That was not an easy battle,” Aniston said. “I wanted [my character] to look different. The argument from the studio, and I am sorry to call you out, was that, ‘We’re just afraid it won’t look like you.’ And I said, ‘That’s kind of the point!’ I still think it might look a little bit like me. But I’m glad I fought for it and stuck to my guns.”

The Friends alum played Dr. Julia Harris in Horrible Bosses, which followed three friends who conspired to murder their awful bosses when they realized they were standing in the way of their happiness. The R-rated comedy also starred Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, Jason Sudeikis and Kevin Spacey. They all, including Aniston, also returned for the 2014 sequel, Horrible Bosses 2.

Aniston added that she “loved” both of the Horrible Bosses films because they helped her pivot her away from her “girl next door” archetype.

“I was always, sort of, seen as a girl next door, you know, the ingenuine,” The Morning Show actress explained. “It was really fun to play somebody like this because it’s so far away from anything that I am. And I think that’s what the director liked — this is so not what you would expect from this gal. That was the fun of it. I think that’s what made it more creatively exciting for me obviously.”
