West Bengal Government Mandates Bengali Films to Be Screened During Prime Time in Cinema Halls

The decision has been taken to “encourage regional cinema and ensure that Bengali films receive adequate exposure and commercial opportunity in their home state.” It will promote regional movies and help improve the conditions of the local film industry. The directive is also aimed at boosting Box Office performance. It will help Bengali films give a tough competition to Hindi, South and International movies. As per the notification, “amendments to the West Bengal Cinemas (Regulation of Public Exhibitions) Rules, 1956, will be made in due course.”
A total of 365 prime time screenings, between 3 pm and 9 pm are to be held throughout the year. This will also ensure Bengali cinema is accessible to audiences every year, all year-round. The order will be in force until further notice.

It would be interesting to note if Bengali movies receive a boost after the implementation of the directive. However, theatre owners may have a tough time over scheduling shows as per the new rules.
