Did You Know? Ranbir Kapoor Was Aanand L Rai’s First Choice for Raanjhanaa

Raanjhanaa, featuring Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and Dhanush, is indeed considered a memorable love story from Bollywood. The story resonated with audiences, and it remains a loved and celebrated film. Dhanush was phenomenal as Kundan, and it is difficult to imagine anyone else playing the role. However, in a previous interview, the director, Aanand L Rai mentioned that his first preference was Ranbir Kapoor, believing he would have been an excellent fit for the role.

During a past interview, Aanand L Rai discussed the process of making Raanjhanaa. Regarding the casting process, Aanand revealed that he initially considered Ranbir Kapoor for the role. He said, “An actor who keeps himself simple and lets himself blend into the crowd, which is a difficult thing, I believe, is Ranbir Kapoor, but he was not available at that time, and as we were searching for such an actor, we found Dhanush.” 

Surely, fans might find it difficult to imagine Ranbir Kapoor in the role of Kundan, as Dhanush’s performance was so convincing that he truly lived the character. Had Ranbir Kapoor accepted the part, it would have been the second film together for him with Sonam Kapoor after their debut in Saawariya. 

In what can be called good news for fans of Raanjhanaa, Aanand L Rai is preparing to make another love story, featuring Dhanush. The film, titled Tere Ishk Mein, has grabbed some attention after the release of its teaser, and it will star Kriti Sanon as the female lead.

For those unaware, Tere Ishk Mein is connected to the world of Raanjhanaa, a highly successful film of 2013, which has gained a cult following. Himanshu Sharma has written the script, and Aanand L Rai is directing the upcoming romantic drama. The movie is expected to feature a high-quality soundtrack, with AR Rahman composing the songs and Irshad Kamil writing the lyrics. The romantic-action drama is set to be released in theatres on November 28, 2025.
