Box Office Update: Metro…In Dino Has a Decent Day 1 at The Cash Counters

Anurag Basu has made a return to the big screen with Metro…In Dino, which is considered a spiritual sequel to his well-received 2007 film, Life In A…Metro. Exploring familiar themes of modern love, heartbreak, and the challenges of urban relationships, this new ensemble drama features Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Sheikh, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Anupam Kher, and Neena Gupta. Despite the presence of such talented actors, the film’s initial performance at the box office was modest. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Metro…In Dino collected Rs. 3.35 crore on its opening day.

On the first day, the overall occupancy rate was 17.99%, with morning shows registering 8.64%. Attendance gradually increased throughout the day, as afternoon and evening shows reached 14.24% and 17.99% respectively, and peaked at 31.09% during the night shows. Interestingly, big markets such as Delhi-NCR and Mumbai showed lower occupancies, at only 19.25% and 19.50%.

Metro...In Dino Movie Still

Considering the opening day figures, while Metro…In Dino surpasses Anurag Basu’s previous film Life In A… Metro, which released with Rs 87 lakh in 2007 and ultimately collected around Rs 24 crore worldwide, it does not live up to some of his more recent projects. His previous theatrical release, Jagga Jasoos, featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, began with Rs 8.57 crore, a number that was seen as a modest start then. Also, the new film has also shown less success when compared to Sara Ali Khan’s 2023 release, Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, which opened with Rs 5.49 crore.

Adding to its challenges, Metro… In Dino is facing tough competition at the box office. Jurassic World Rebirth had a successful opening, earning Rs 9 crore on its first day, and is expected to sustain its performance. Simultaneously, films from the prior week are still performing well, Kajol’s Maa collected Rs 1 crore on Day 8, while Brad Pitt’s high-action F1 film earned Rs 3.50 crore on its eighth day and continues to be a favoured selection among audiences. Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par, now in its third week, is also faring well, having collected an impressive Rs 137 crore in its first two weeks.

Metro...In Dino Ensemble Cast Still

Metro…In Dino does possess some advantage, such as a well-received soundtrack and generally favourable positive word of mouth. However, its ultimate success remains to be seen ahead. Considering its less-than-ideal initial performance, Metro… In Dino will require a good weekend collection and consistent weekday occupancies as well to compensate its budget and achieve a significant presence at the box office.
